The explosive Roma fanfare bands of the Balkans.
Across Serbia, North Macedonia, Romania and neighbouring countries, Roma brass bands turn weddings, festivals and funerals into walls of sound. Built around trumpets, tubas and drums, the style blends Ottoman, folk and military-band roots into something fast, loud and irresistibly danceable.
Bands such as Fanfare Ciocărlia and the ensembles of the Guča trumpet festival have carried Balkan Roma brass to global audiences. Above all it remains functional community music — the soundtrack of celebration.
