Roma dance ranges from the fierce, percussive baile of flamenco to communal folk forms and a thriving contemporary scene. As with music, the dancer is often a tradition-bearer, and movement carries courtship, celebration, mourning and memory.
In Andalusia, baile is the danced voice of flamenco — every gesture of hands, arms and feet answering the song and guitar. In the Balkans and Central Europe, circle and couple dances belong to weddings and feast days, while today companies and soloists take Roma choreography onto international stages and blend it with modern forms.
