The violin and hammered dulcimer at the heart of Central-European Roma music.
In Hungary and Romania, Roma ensembles built around the violin and the cimbalom (a large hammered dulcimer) defined the café and concert music for which the region became famous. These string bands accompanied dining, dancing and celebration for centuries and shaped the wider national musical identity.
The tradition demands extraordinary virtuosity and a repertoire passed down within families — from the verbunkos and csárdás to concert showpieces. The Roma string orchestra remains an emblem of Central-European musical life.
