The Gitanos and the birth of flamenco.

The Roma of Spain and Portugal — the Gitanos and Calé — arrived in the 15th century and, despite long persecution, became inseparable from Andalusian culture, above all through flamenco. Their music and dance shaped one of the most recognisable art forms in the world.

Today Spain has one of Europe’s largest Roma populations, with deep roots in the south.
