From India the ancestors of the Roma moved westward over generations, passing through Persia, Armenia and the Byzantine world before reaching the edges of Europe. Each region left traces in the language — Persian, Armenian and Greek loanwords mark the route.

The journey was gradual, not a single exodus, spanning centuries.
