Language & Identity

The Romani Language

An Indo-Aryan language carried out of India.

Romani descends from the Indo-Aryan languages of north-western India and is closely related to Sanskrit and to modern languages such as Hindi and Punjabi. Its core vocabulary and grammar are the strongest evidence of the Roma’s Indian origin.

As the language travelled it absorbed words from Persian, Armenian, Greek and many European languages — a spoken record of the migration.
