In Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and neighbouring lands, Roma musicians defined the café-orchestra and folk-string traditions, becoming central to national musical identity. Roma communities here have a long, complex history of both contribution and exclusion.

These countries remain home to large, culturally rich Roma populations.
