Roma groups are recorded in the Byzantine Balkans by around the 13th–14th centuries and spread into Central and Western Europe over the following two hundred years. By the 15th–16th centuries their presence is documented across much of the continent.

Initial curiosity often gave way to suspicion and hostile laws as communities settled.
