Diverse and often difficult trajectories across nations.

Roma experiences across Europe diverged sharply. Some communities settled and integrated; others faced expulsion, forced assimilation, or — in the Romanian principalities — centuries of slavery that lasted until the 19th century.

These divergent histories produced the rich regional diversity of today’s Roma communities.
