Because the early Roma left few written records, their history is reconstructed largely from indirect evidence. Historical linguistics maps the migration through layers of borrowed words, while population genetics independently supports an Indian origin and the broad route of travel.
Together these strands give a remarkably coherent picture of a millennium-long journey.
