Understanding their shared Indian origin gives Roma across many countries a common thread of identity, beyond the divisions of nation, dialect and local history. It also corrects centuries of myth — the very word "gypsy" arose from a mistaken belief that the Roma came from Egypt.

A clear origin story is part of reclaiming the narrative.
